field mice

“birds make sounds” i say, “do you hear them?” i say

“do you hear the bird sounds?” i say, and think of other questions to ask you

some are about the birds, which kinds they are, others are about other things

like trees and leaves and beautiful flowers that look beautiful when you are looking at them and i'm watching you do it

“the weather is turning, i feel good” you say, and think of other things but don't say them

your face looks beautiful when calm and i appreciate that while i'm looking at it

“tell me something” you say “tell me anything”

“the human body takes eighty years to fully decompose” i say

“the oldest turtle is a hundred and twenty years old” you say

“i want to be buried beneath a tree” i say

“now or when you die?” you say
